A Guide to Common Hair Conditions and Their Solutions

Last updated 7 months ago

As a hairstylist, you will have clients that have a wide range of hair styles, types, and conditions. In order to truly succeed in a hair salon job, you will have to learn how to cater to all different kinds of hair. Use this guide to learn about common hair conditions and how to fix them so you can keep all of your clients happy:

Chemically-Treated Hair

Hair dye and styling products can wreak havoc on the condition of a client’s hair, especially if the person does not use products that help reverse the damage. Chemicals strip hair of its natural luster, causing it to look limp and lifeless. Teach clients with chemically-treated hair to use the right kind of shampoo and conditioner. You should also show them how to comb their hair from the bottom up and use deep conditioners to protect and repair their hair.

Dandruff

Anything from stress to hormonal changes can cause dandruff to flare up on a person’s scalp. Scratching the scalp can make the problem even worse. There are medicated shampoos created specifically to combat dandruff. It is important to tell your clients to use a deep conditioner in conjunction with dandruff shampoo so they do not dry out their hair.

Split Ends

When you have a hairstyling career, many of your clients will probably have issues with split ends. Heat, chemicals, and even certain styling products can strip away the outer layer of the hair, allowing the ends to break. Trim split ends and rejuvenate the hair with moisturizing products. Advise your clients to opt for a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush, especially right after a shower.
